Research
The major focus of my research has been on the clinical epidemiology of infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on developing improved observational methods to assess important clinical questions. I have focused on the assessment of the effectiveness of licensed vaccines (including the polysaccharide and the polysaccharide-protein conjugate vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae type b, the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, and varicella vaccine) in actual practice, the problem of occult bacteremia in young febrile children, and Lyme disease.
I have been particularly interested in the issue of management of persons bitten by a deer tick and the long-term outcomes of persons with Lyme disease.
