Research
I focus on quality assessment of clinician-patient communication, especially on those related to screening tests such as cancer screening tests (in adults) and newborn genetic screening tests (after routine newborn screening for Cystic Fibrosis or Sickle Cell Disease). Where most previous communication research has focused on small populations of doctors and patients, I work more with larger populations of physicians already graduated to community practice.

My main method is the "Brief Standardized Communication Assessment" (BSCA), a streamlined version of simulated patient encounter that can be cost-efficiently used over the phone for several hundred participants for each project. My work overlaps with the areas of communication, ethics, quality improvement, medical education, and health services research.
