Research
My research interests are focused on two areas of Pediatric Emergency Medicine: violent injury control and; management of acute asthma exacerbations. While thousands of children are treated for violence-related injuries annually in the Emergency Department (ED), surveillance of these injuries has not been undertaken. Several projects will examine patterns of violent injuries in children, possible risk factors for recurrent injury events, and intervention strategies.
Thousands of children are also treated in the ED annually for acute asthma exacerbations. Most of these children are treated with beta-adrenergic agents and oral corticosteroids. The goal of my work is to examine clinical parameters for corticosteroid therapy, and to introduce therapeutic alternatives to standard corticosteroid regimens for acute asthma exacerbations. This work includes the pre-hospital, ED, and outpatient clinic settings.
