Research
My primary clinical interests are alcoholism and mood disorders. In these areas, I am working to see what alterations in brain chemistry are occurring and why they happen. If we can understand those aspects of the disorders, we may be able to treat them better. My primary interest in basic science is the relationship between function and the regulation of brain energy metabolism and neurotransmission.

To this end, I combine magnetic resonance spectroscopy (similar to magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, but to measure chemicals instead of looking at pictures of the brain) and mathematical modeling. I collaborate with a variety of investigators from Psychiatry, Neurology, and Engineering to achieve these goals.
